What is PCOS?
PCOS, also known as Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, is a common problem in girls and young women. 1 in 10 women have PCOS. So, if you have been diagnosed with PCOS, or think you have PCOS, know that you are not alone.
PCOS is a hormone imbalance that can lead to irregular periods, excess hair on the face, chest, lower stomach, and lower back, and can cause acne. Some women with PCOS can also have an increased risk to develop Type 2 Diabetes or have a harder time losing weight.
It can begin in the teen years and last into adulthood.
Common signs of PCOS are:
Irregular periods
Excess Hair
Acne
Problems with weight gain
Diabetes
How do I know if I have PCOS?
If you have any of the symptoms above, talk to your doctor or a doctor specialized in treating young women with PCOS. PCOS in teen girls can look different in PCOS in adult women and you will need to talk to your doctor about specifics about your menstrual cycle. Usually, a hormone evaluation is needed and sometimes an ultrasound is recommended also in addition to a detailed history. This diagnosis is often missed in young girls so if you suspect you have it, it is very important to get it evaluated.
What if I have worries about PCOS?
If you are worried you have PCOS, please know that you are not alone. It is normal to feel frustrated and sad. Talk to a doctor who is experienced in treating you and evaluating your symptoms. Also know that there are treatments available that can help you have regular periods, control your acne, and prevent you from developing diabetes. Diet and exercise are also very important in controlling the symptoms of PCOS.
